The usual emergency methods (Q17.20) are available for teenagers. When emergency contraception is required the 'Yuzpe Method' is generally used. Pills with 100 micrograms of ethinyl oestradiol are taken after a meal and within 72 hours of intercourse and the dose is repeated after 12 hours. Failures are often due to a previous episode of sexual activity. An IUCD (coil) introduced post-coitally may be effective more than 72 hours after intercourse.
