Removing Fibroids - Myomectomy for infertility
Fibroids become more common in the later years of reproductive life (15).
The relationship between fibroids and infertility has been the subject of debate. Implantation and pregnancy rates have been found to be reduced only when the fibroids are distorting the endometrial cavity (submucous fibroids).
Until recently, the only treatment was myomectomy at laparotomy. Developments with minimally invasive surgery and in particular transcervical hysteroscopy (Figure 24.2) allow resection of submucous fibroids. Controlled trials are required to establish the benefits.
