Could I conceive whilst I am taking the combined oral contraceptive pill?

There are few failures associated with the combined oral contraceptive pill provided that the combined oral contraceptive pill has been taken correctly. Ideally, the combined oral contraceptive pill should be taken at the same time each day. There is a maximum safety limit of 12 hours. If the combined oral contraceptive pill is taken more than 12 hours late additional precautions are essential (18). The seven pill-free days allow the natural hormone cycle to begin. If the gap is inadvertently increased, ovulation (egg release) can occur and pregnancy may ensue. During a gastro-intestinal upset (vomiting or severe diarrhoea) the combined oral contraceptive pill may not be absorbed and additional precautions are required. The additional precautions should be continued for at least seven days after the bowel has settled. Similarly, some antibiotics reduce the absorption of the combined oral contraceptive pill and the same precautions would apply.
