Abstract:

There is an association between pelvic adhesions and chronic pelvic pain. Findings from diagnostic laparoscopies indicate that the prevalence of adhesions in women with chronic pelvic pain is higher than in asymptomatic women undergoing laparoscopic sterilization (36 per cent vs. 15 per cent). Cure or significant reduction of symptoms has been reported after microsurgical and laparoscopic adhesiolysis; weak study designs call for caution in the interpretation of these results. There is a place for adhesiolysis in the management of chronic pelvic pain, but patients should be selected carefully and counselled to avoid unrealistic expectations.
