The role of GnRH in human biology is discussed inmenstrual cycles . Gonadotrophin releasing hormone is released by the hypothalamus and controls release of the gonadotrophic hormones FSH and LH. Analogues of GnRH produced by pharmacologists and currently available for clinical use are agonists (they mimic natural GnRH). They may initially have a stimulatory effect (flare responseQ33.5) which is then followed by an inhibitory action on the pituitary gland gonadotrophin output and this, in turn, leads to a fall in ovarian output of sex hormones. This is called down-regulation.
