Every medicine that has proven benefits will have occasional side effects. Prescribing is always a matter of weighing up the potential benefits and risks (Figure 33.1). Before prescribing a medication, your doctor will probably let you know if there are any major side effects and what you should do if they occur. When a new medication is being evaluated, the company is likely to record all the symptoms that the evaluating patients describe. These may appear on patient information leaflets without any statistical evidence that the 'side-effect? is related to the medication or how frequently the problem is likely to be encountered.
