Knowledge of gestational age of the pregnancy is critical in determining most management issues. Many investigations such as those relating to fetal anomaly diagnosis can only be interpreted by knowing how advanced the pregnancy is. The appropriateness of the size of the baby can only be interpreted in the knowledge of gestational age. Suppression of premature labour or induction of labour for postmaturity require knowledge of the duration of the pregnancy.
